After three films in the “Expendables” series, it looks like moviegoers have seen the old gang get back together one too many times.
Sylvester Stallone reunited with the likes of Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas and Mel Gibson in “The Expendables 3″ over the weekend, but the collection of old-school action heroes wasn’t enough to topple the heroes in a half shell of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.” Leonardo led his brothers to a second consecutive weekend victory at the box office, winning first place with $28.4 million, just ahead of Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy,” which roped in a score of $24.7 million in its third weekend in theaters.

Strong holds for “Turtles” and “Guardians” left little room to breathe for “The Expendables 3,” opening in fourth place (behind fellow newcomer “Let’s Be Cops”) with $16.2 million — a far cry from the $34.8 million opening of 2010′s “The Expendables,” or even the $28.6 million opening of 2012′s “The Expendables 2.”
The moral of the story? If Sly pushes forward with an “Expendables 4,” he better think about enlisting Splinter.
